Athletes and drugs and sentences and womens’ imprisonment

This seems fairly fitting to raise this story – Six month sentence for Jones.

In January Marion Jones was sentenced to six months, two years probation and supervised release (including 800 hours of community service) to be served consecutively for lying and involvement in drug fraud. Ok, these are crimes – but they are deception and not to do with public harm. She also has an infant son she is still nursing. This seems very heavy handed to me. This is *not* to do with her admission that she took drugs…for which she faced public humiliation, retired from athletics, returned her five Olympic medals and has been shunned by her former acquaintances. I wonder what the system thinks it is getting out of destroying this woman, and her children’s, life for six months.

Does this not make sense to anyone else?
